Effectiveness of vaccines against infection less than 50% on average

Daily Mail | 6 Nov 2021

  • The effectiveness of all three COVID-19 vaccines available in the U.S. has dropped by 50%, a new study finds
  • The combined effectiveness of all three shots at preventing infection from Covid reached as low as 48% in September, falling from 87% in March
  • The Moderna jab is the most effective now, reducing risk of infection by 58%, compared to 43% by the Pfizer shot and 13% for the J&J shot
  • Vaccines are still very effective at preventing death from COVID-19, though, and significantly reduce the risk among people over 65
  • Waning efficacy of the vaccines has been cited as the reason why Covid booster shots are needed, especially among vulnerable populations

The protection that fully vaccinated Americans have against COVID-19 infection severely drops over time, a new study suggests.

A team led by the Public Health Institute in Oakland, California, found that the overall effectiveness of the three Covid vaccines available in the U.S fell from 87 percent in March to 48 percent by September.

Johnson & Johnson vaccine recipients are especially at risk with just 13 percent efficacy against contracting the virus.
