Iran’s foreign minister, Javad Zarif, has sent out a tweet indicating a deal has been reached on Iran’s nuclear program after eight days of negotiations and a broken deadline:
Found solutions. Ready to start drafting immediately.
Iranian President Hassan Rouhani sent out a similar tweet:
Solutions on key parameters of Iran #nuclear case reached. Drafting to start immediately, to finish by June 30th. #IranTalks
Secretary of State John Kerry said there are now “parameters” for a deal:
Big day: #EU, P5+1, and #Iran now have parameters to resolve major issues on nuclear program. Back to work soon on a final deal.
Zarif, European Union High Representative Federica Mogherini and U.S. are expected to make statements.
“What we expect today is a statement and the fact that we have all reached common understanding on how to resolve the issues,” Zarif told reporters in Lausanne, Switzerland. “But the agreement, a written agreement, is something that needs to be drafted by all participants and agreed upon in a multilateral process. And that would take, hopefully, three months, to finalize, and hopefully less.”
Israel, U.S. Hint Military Action
The prime minister of Israel, Benjamin Netanyahu, issued a statement prior an official announcement on the negotiations. “Any deal must significantly roll back Iran’s nuclear capabilities and stop its terrorism and aggression,” he said.
Earlier today Yuval Steinitz, the Israeli intelligence minister, said “the military option is on the table.”
Steinitz said Israel would not ask the United States for permission to bomb Iran’s nuclear facilities. Referring to the Israeli attack on Iraq’s Osirak nuclear reactor in 1981, he said the “operation was not carried out in agreement with the United States.”
On Tuesday U.S. Defense Secretary Ashton Carter said military action against Iran would be an option if a deal was not reached in Switzerland.
“If there is a good agreement to have, obviously it is worth waiting for and completing the negotiations,” he told NBC’s “Today” show. If an agreement was not reached, Carter added, then “the military option certainly will remain on the table.”
