WHO recommends withdrawal of Type II oral polio vaccine

The trivalent vaccine which was being used will be phased out in a year as a component of it has been found to have shown some concern

The World Health Organisation has recommended the withrawal of a specific type of oral polio vaccine which is used to fight Type II variant from April 2016, reports NDTV. WHO suggests the use of a bivalent vaccine instead of a trivalent vaccine which currently in use in India. It also said that an injectable polio vaccine should be used.

The trivalent vaccine which was being used will be phased out in a year as a component of it has been found to have shown some concern.

Currently both injectable and oral vaccines are being used in India.

Though polio has been eradicated in the country, the disease is prevealent in neighbouring Pakistan and Afghanistan.
