Former Lakeland Health Chief Executive David Buckleigh has raised his concerns over Rotorua District Council’s decision to undertake public consultation on water fluoridation.
In a letter to Mayor Steve Chadwick, Buckleigh questioned the motivation and the wisdom behind adding a US CDC designated hazardous substance to Rotorua’s water supply.
“Where is the pressure coming from to hold such a consultation? Who wants to fluoridate the Rotorua water supply and hold a referendum on the subject?” Buckleigh asked.
Buckleigh raised concerns similar to those already raised by dentists who note that adding a chemical substance to public water is effectively forced medical treatment without proper direction or monitoring; a practice that violates modern pharmacological principles and ethics.
Dentist Johannes Van Der Welt told the Waikato Times “the fluoride in water fluoridation is closer to toxic waste, it’s not the kind of fluoride that’s natural in water.”
Buckleigh also questioned the validity of the recent referendum in Hamilton in which it was reported that 70 per cent voted for fluoridation to resume. He argues that close analysis of the referendum reveals that “17.4% of the total population determined that fluoridation would be forced on the 141,662 people (100%) who live in Hamilton. This is hardly a democratic method to determine what should or should not happen”.
Claims by pro-fluoridation advocates, such as David Crum, the chief executive of the New Zealand Dental Association; who suggests that water fluoridation is a “cost effective policy”, are demonstrably questionable as illustrated by Paul Wedel’s submission to the Wellington Regional Council on the economics of fluoride in Wellington.
In his presentation to Wellington Councillors, Wedel breaks down the cost-benefits of water fluoridation. At a cost of $195,000 per year, the actual amount of fluoride that makes contact with people’s teeth works out to $1200 with the vast majority at around $193,000 literally going down the drain which works out to 40,000kg a year being dumped into the environment.

Anti-fluoride campaigner, Dr Paul Connett; a Professor of Chemistry, maintains that water fluoridation is poor medical practice, unethical and that evidence of any benefit is weak.
He argues that there is no adequate margin of safety to protect all citizens from known effects and that it is the only example of New Zealand using the public water supply to deliver medicine.
Connett is critical of the practice of mass medication where you cannot control who gets the medicine and you cannot control the dose. He points out that no doctor has prescribed this medicine or is tracking individual responses to it and no NZ health agency is monitoring exposure or tracking side effects.
Connett also emphasizes the fact that fluoride is not a nutrient and there is not a single process inside the body that needs fluoride to function properly. It is a known toxic substance that interferes with many fundamental biochemical functions.
“The chemicals used are not pharmaceutical grade as used in dental products, they come from wet scrubbers of the phosphate fertiliser industry” says Connett.
Hazardous waste cannot be dumped into the sea by international law so why are NZ city councils dumping it into the public water supply?
